from: www.melintregwynt.co.uk/journal/2007/7/9/an-i...

The first time when I pass by the store of MUJI, its clear light and tidy decoration immediately attract my attention. Going into it, I found that there are a lot of self-made products which are beautiful without redundant packaging. It is a famous Japanese retail company which sells a variety of household and consumer goods.

It is said that its name is derived from the first part of Mujirushi Ryohin, which means “No Brand Quality Goods”. It started with 40 products and now there are more than 7000 products included. Its products range from stationery, and clothing for men and women, to food items and appliances for kitchen and bathroom. Now it gradually produces some household goods. It is developed to offer cheap quality goods and were marketed using the slogan ”Lower priced for a reason.” Its “no-brand” strategy means that little money is spent on advertisement or classical marketing and also means its products are attractive to customers who like unbranded products for aesthetic reasons. It has three factory outlets at Osaka, Gotenba and Fukuoka. In addition, it opens 181 stores and supplies 147 outlets. There are also some retail stores in Taiwan and is popular with teenagers for its exquisite design. MUJI aims at producing many items in our daily life in order to satisfy customers’ need. Maybe one day it may become a store selling products in all aspects. Comparing to the cost of living in Japan, the price of the products in MUJI is quite expensive. Still, their nice quality and texture lure people to buy.

Ice Cream Paradise- Häagen-Dazs

In summer, I always want to eat ice cream as my recreation because the weather in Taiwan is usually really hot. There many brands of ice cream in market made in not only Taiwan but also other countries. Ice cream made in Japan, Italy, Switzerland and America is renowned. The ice cream company which has the most retail stores and they are spread all over the world is “Häagen-Dazs”. It produces ice cream, ice cream bars, ice cream cakes, sorbet and frozen yogurt.

It was established by Polish immigrants Reuben and Rose Mattus in 1961. The name of the brand looks like it is derived from Germanic languages but actually it is not. This is known in the marketing industry as foreign branding. It was told by Reuben Mattus’s daughter that her father just sat at the kitchen table saying nonsense words until he came up with a combination he liked. In this way, the name would be unique. Its headquarters is in Oakland, CA, U.S. and the first retail store is in Brooklyn, NY. At first, it started its business with three flavors- vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Now, it has more than 56 kinds of flavors and it will release some limited editions in particular countries or special seasons. For example, the flavor of Rum Raisin is popular among the youth and children. It also sells ice cream cakes of different kinds of flavor
which attracts many customers to buy.

Due to the increasing costs of their ingredients and the delivery of the product, it announced that it would be reducing the size of their ice cream cartoons. However, it is still well-known and adorned by the public. Its good quality surely enhances its reputation and that’s why it earns a huge amount of money even though the economic situation all over the world is not as good as before.

The logo of Starbucks now The first logo of Starbucks

As people’s life is much busier than before, what they need to spirit them up may be a cup of coffee. It provides small tables for individuals and twin sofas as alternative choices for people. Starbucks first opened in Seattle, Washington, United States. After it set up its goal to start beverage business, they opened its first locations outside Seattle in US. Later, it expanded its territory to more than 40 countries inclusive of those in Oceania, Europe, Africa and Asia. In 2008, it both improved itself and faced challenges. The chairman of Starbucks must determine how to contend with higher materials prices and enhanced competition from lower-price fast food chains, including McDonald’s. For improvement, it announced its hope to enter the energy drink market by no longer using pre-ground coffee beans. Then, it called the coffee “fresh-pressed” coffee system.

Store closures did happen amid growing economic uncertainty in 2008. The cuts included layoffs and closing to boost its profit. In 2009, it was in its low tide in US since a store in NY was bombed. Moreover, it has faced many criticisms and controversies involved alleged relationship with the Israeli military, labor disputes and market strategy, which is a buyout of Seattle Coffee Company. However, it also does environmental impacts. One of the examples is that the stores give leftover coffee grounds for people who need compost. Another example is that it uses recycled content in food packaging and received award from the National Recycling Coalition Recycling Works.

Being a largest coffeehouse company all over the world, it invents creative and interesting drink to catch attention of the public. With many selections released irregularly, Starbucks is really a good opportunity to enjoy your leisure time!
